Composting Program
A large compost facility, with six 4’ x 4’ x 4’ bins capable of composting up to 10,000 pounds of food prep waste from food services was built by students in 2017. On average, students collect and compost more than 5000 pounds of waste each year from food services. Dead leaves are dropped at the garden by members of the community and used as a source of carbon in the composting. The finished compost is used as a source of fertilizer and organic material for the school gardens, allowing for the entire school garden to be 100% organic. Two students are given “science aid” positions for one class hour each day to coordinate and execute the composting program at the high school. This includes collecting the compost, transporting it to the composting facility, monitoring and modifying the process of composting (adding various “ingredients” depending on variables), and recording the process of composting (weight and temperature).
