UNION BOTANY

Growing Community

At Union High School in Tulsa, Oklahoma, we have taken a novel approach to teaching botany at the high school level.  Although we cover all the subject matter a typical botany class would, the class is as much about sustainability as it is botany.   We learn through executing projects to improve sustainability and try to integrate as much as possible into the community and have had organic farmers, florists, horticulturists, landscapers, garden centers, bonsai masters, heirloom seed specialists, landscape designers, and others all visit with the class or host field trips.  For the coming school year, approximately 300 students have enrolled in this elective class, filling ten different sections of Botany.

GARDEN PROJECTS

Botany at Union High School is project based and student led.  Students research a subject, design and propose a project related to it, then carry out that project.  Each year new, tangible projects improving the community are created.

GREENHOUSE PROJECTS

In 2019, using school bond monies, the district built a rooftop 20' x 20' fully automated greenhouse adjacent to the botany classroom

Community Collaborations

Botany students collaborate on projects with other classes at Union and businesses/organizations in the community at large.

MORE PROJECTS

We believe in building a community of well-informed and healthy citizens. We continue to look for creative approaches to encourage personal growth and academic exploration.  Reach out if you would like to be part of the journey!
